Air Jamaica’s Daily Barbados Flights
Air Jamaica, the Caribbean region’s leading airliner continues to increase its wing span—the company has launched a new daily service to Barbados. The company must be delighted that one of its biggest boosters for the new route, at least in New York, is Barbados' own Consul General, Jessica Odle. While celebrating the 10th anniversary of partnership between Air Jamaica and Barbados last month, at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge, she called on her compatriots to support "the only carrier of the region today."
"I cannot speak of any other because it has not been presented to me formally. I have only today, as I stand here, a relationship with Air Jamaica as a carrier to the Caribbean and to Barbados. And until that changes I have to big up Air Jamaica and want to urge each and everyone of you to start planning your trips on Air Jamaica - the prices are great."
There are always many choices when it comes to flights to the Caribbean region, Ms. Odle acknowledged. But, there was a difference with Air Jamaica. "Our first choice must be to patriotism and in this context, patriotism is Caribbean, Caribbean, Caribbean - first, second and last."
Air Jamaica's daily flights to Barbados depart from JFK Airport in New York. Analyst see the development as recognition that travel and tourism in the Eastern Caribbean offers lucrative returns. The new service was announced in the wake of the winding up of BWIA West Indies Airways and the decision by its successor, Caribbean Airlines, to drop Barbados from its non-stop New York schedule.
"We intend to be flying to Barbados for a very long time," noted Paul Pennicook, Air Jamaica's Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "Barbados is clearly the hub of the Eastern Caribbean so by flying into Barbados as frequently as we do, we are also serving our Caribbean brothers and sisters."
In addition to daily non-stop service to and from New York, Air Jamaica also flies between Barbados and the Montego Bay, Jamaica hub on a daily basis, Mr. Pennicook noted.
Air Jamaica’s Regional Director for the Northeast USA, Campbell Rudder, said the new service on Barbados' designated national flag carrier is not a direct, but non-stop service, and that the convenient schedules eliminates any hassles when it comes to dealing with Immigration and Customs at Grantley Adams International Airport, on both arrival and departure.
Air Jamaica provides more non-stop flights to Jamaica than any other carrier with more than 270 flights per week from Atlanta, Baltimore/Washington, Chicago, Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, New York (JFK), Orlando, and Philadelphia in the United States; Toronto in Canada; and from London in the United Kingdom to Montego Bay and Kingston. The company also offers intra-regional service with flights between Jamaica and the Bahamas, Barbados, Bonaire, Cuba, Curacao, Grand Cayman, Grenada and St. Lucia.

I recently flew (9/1/07) Air Jamaica from Ft. Lauderdale to Barabados and was extremely disappointed. My flight was scheduled for 9:40am, I arrived at 6:40am to ensure ample time to check in. Nonetheless, there were customers from the previous day whose flight was cancelled therefore there was chaotic at the airport.
My flight was moved to 11:15, 12:15 and finally we were able to board at 1:30. I was very disappointed with the aircraft, it seemed very old, a conclusion made based on the interior. There was no leg room and only 2 restrooms at the back of the plane for the entire flight.
I have vowed to never fly Air Jamaica again and have advised my friends, family and co-workers the same. I will be in Barabados for a few months on assignment, but I am certain that I will use an American carrier for my return flight.
